Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map, and usually a compass, to navigate between checkpoints on an unfamiliar course in bush terrain, parkland or urban areas.

If you like a physical and mental challenge while exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

Click the link below for a brief summary of the details relating our club's annual summer street orienteering series (or "Street-O" as it is affectionately called).

The following links give more detail. (It is worth noting that there is no international, or even national, format for street orienteering. Every club/region that runs a street orienteering event uses their own format. Street-O, as described in these links, pertains only to the format that Newcastle Orienteering Club has adopted.)

Orienteering is a great way to exercise both your body and your brain.

It is a bit like Park Run. With Park Run you challenge yourself physically by completing a 5km course. The challenge is principally against yourself … to keep turning up and to maybe even improve (or not slow down too much). Of course, for some there is the added challenge of competing against the other competitors that have turned up.

With Street-O you challenge yourself by trying to score as many points as you can in a 45 minute time frame. You score points by going to “controls”, the location of which are shown to you on a map that you carry with you. So you get the physical challenge of trying to keep moving for 45 minutes and the mental challenge of trying to work out which controls to visit and the best way to get to each of those controls all while keeping track of where you actually are. Like Park Run, the challenge is principally against yourself although there is the added thrill of competing against other competitors if that is your thing.

Introduction: Orienteering is a great way to exercise both your body and your brain.
Street O map snippet 2

Street-O: In Street-O you run, walk (or even push a pram) around a suburban course trying to get as many points as you can in 45 minutes. The location and point value of “controls” are given to you on a specially prepared map. You choose which controls to visit and how to get to them. Your visit to each control is recorded on your phone or smartwatch using the MapRun GPS app.

Who Can Compete: Open to all comers and all abilities, although children under 15 must be accompanied by someone older at all times.

What You Need:  You will need to have a smartphone with the MapRun app installed. No other equipment is required. Wear what you would normally wear when doing something active.

When Is It: Every Wednesday afternoon from October through February (except Xmas-New Years week). Start times available from 5:00pm to 6:30pm.

Where Is it: Each Street-O event is in a different location. We have maps covering nearly all of the suburbs of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland plus parts of Port Stephens. To find where the event is each week, see the latest calendar of Street-O events.

Cost: Click here to see the current entry fees
Note
: We encourage competitors to enter online (via Eventor) before 3:30pm on the day of the event (i.e. the Wednesday).

The Street-O Series: The Street-O Series (SS) consists of 17 events run over the October-February period. Your series score is made up from your best 10 results over the 17 events. The most coveted prize in the series, though, is the “Toblerone” Award … for those who make it to all 17 events!
