Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map, and usually a compass, to navigate between checkpoints on an unfamiliar course in bush terrain, parkland or urban areas.

If you like a physical and mental challenge while exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

Entry Fees

Start times: 9:30 to 11:30am with course closure at 1pm. Please ensure you start your course with enough time to complete it prior to course closure

NB. The area is subject to mine subsidence, which is marked on the maps by pink/purple dots. There may be some faded pink streamers hanging in these areas, but BE ALERT.

Survey lines of steel pegs covered with white pipe exist in the area. Some pegs have lost their cover so take care when near these survey lines, shown by a pink line on the map.

The area has some quite steep slopes, so gravel and leaf litter can be slippery.

If you hear trail bikes or 4WD’s, GET OUT OF THEIR WAY.

From the setter:

The Wallaroo curse strikes again! Steady rain greeted the setter  during final preparations and lasted until about half way through the event. This added a few challenges for competitors with slippery conditions and fogging glasses (and made the track in a little precarious). Feedback from runners was positive with people enjoying the open running and lack of serious hills. Thanks to Bjorn Mella for vetting and organising the event and thanks to all those who helped with set up, pack up, control collection and the various other jobs that need to be done, it was like a well oiled (or at least wet) machine.

New - Activites for Kids: Bjorn Mella will be running a training/activity group for our younger orienteers at this event (around 11-12 years old - but i would assume younger would be welcome). THe format is as yet not finalised but the kids should expect some techincal training/games and fun!

Directions: Assembly will be in the quarry. Travel north of Heatherbrae on the Pacific Highway approximately 13.5 km then turn left onto Italia road. Turn right after 3.5 km and follow the dirt track for 600 m to the assembly area. The track is a bit rough but OK for 2 wheel drives.

NOY 1: Sunday 10th April, 2016

So there we are the first NOY out of the way and I missed it due to a sick child. By all accounts it was a good day with a spectacular turnout of 108! (Is this a record for a bush event? Does anyone know?). Results as official.

David, the setter, has written a interesting wrap up for his event - but its so long I had to give it its own page! Jump over and read it now. Or click the Bush button on the Home page.
