Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

Beware of the brown lines!

Event: Summer Street Series 9
Location: Cardiff
Entries: 59
Weather: Mild

”Beware of the brown lines” was the warning. One of the hillier areas of our repertoire of maps left little option but to tackle them head on as there was basically no avoiding the climbs. Christmas holidays saw our numbers reduced but still quite healthy at 59.

The holiday season also brings along a possible trap for our setters. Don’t use boats (unless they are not seaworthy) or caravans (unless they have no wheels) for clues as they are often missing in action due to their owners suddenly heading up the coast for their annual sojourn. Setter Bob Gilbert assures me the “caravan” at 2C was apparently sitting in the appropriate spot just 2 days prior to the event but is now probably at Foster caravan park or some other exotic location well away from our street orienteering adventures. Take heed future course setters!

Even carrying an ankle injury Karen Blatchford quite easily topped the women’s results and Malcolm Roberts fresh from an impressive 5-day performance did likewise in the men’s.

Thanks to Bob for setting a challenging course especially since it was during all the work he did at the 5-day.
