Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

The first event of the 2011/12 Summer Street Series was contested yesterday at Stockton on a beautiful spring evening. A cooling breeze and flat terrain kept conditions comfortable for the 75+ participants that turned out. Setter Stuart Kurtz made good use of the long but narrow map utilising the sharply angeld street pattern to maximise distances needed to be covered when gathering some of the controls. Steven Todkill, last seasons mens winner, scored top points for the day but was beaten by Alex Massey who was 1:59 quicker for the same number of points. Kim van Netten has started out with a solid performance and looks likely to be the one to beat again this season. Carolyn Matthews was her closest rival. Thanks to all those that asssisted Stuart on the day. Next week we are off to a very unflat Cardiff North.
