Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

State League Weekend in Orange including NSW Long Championships

Last weekend a contingent of almost 30 NOC members travelled to Orange for a double-header weekend of State League races. The cool but sunny weather both days made for ideal running conditions.

On Saturday State League 5 was held at Rocky Falls in Mullion State Forest. The spur/gully terrain was a mix of mature pine and open eucalypt forest with a few dirt roads and the occasional small rock outcrop. Visibility was generally good but the knee high regrowth made the going slow in some areas. Courses were of middle distance length with many times under 40 minutes.

State League 6 on Sunday was the NSW Long Championships and saw competitors return to Gumble Pinnacles (site of the 2012 NSW Long Champs). As is befitting a State Championships, the area was technically and physically challenging with predominantly complex granite, some open sections of forest and semi open rough areas. The vegetation had grown slightly since last mapped which generally made the going slower.

While some managed to back-up from the previous afternoon, many found the challenge in a starkly different terrain too much. Times in excess of 1 ½ hours were not uncommon and quite a few were forced to retire after several hours. Finishing your course regardless of elapsed time was an achievement in itself.

Bob Vincent had the stand-out performance of the weekend blitzing the highly competitive M55 class on Saturday with the fastest kilometre rate of any age competitor. He was to continue his excellent form on Sunday retaining his NSW M55 Champion title, with Russell Blatchford not far behind each day in 3rd.

NSW Long Champs placegetters from NOC were:

First - W50A Gayle Quantock; M45A Scott Simson; M55A Bob Vincent; M45AS Peter Orr 1st
Second - W14A Claire Burgess; W35A Sam Howe; W70A Carolyn Chalmers; M Open B John Shaw 2nd
Third – W50A Karen Blatchford; M55A Russell Blatchford; M45AS Peter Newton; M55AS Keith Robertson 3rd

Congratulations to all NOC members who made the journey to Orange and tackled one of Australia’s toughest granite orienteering maps.

The Hard 5 course from both days is shown below and highlights the complexity of the Gumble area.

ACT Championships - National Orienteering League Races #8 & #9

Next weekend a smaller NOC contingent will travel to Canberra for the ACT Middle and Long Distance Championships. For M/W20E and M/W21E they are doubling as National Orienteering League races #8 & #9, as well as the final selection trials for WOC 2015. Based at The Sandhills east of Bungendore, Saturday’s courses will be in the southern section of eucalypt forest which has regrown after sand mining and features numerous knolls and log piles, and the opportunity for some fast running. Sunday’s terrain will be in typical gully/spur terrain with significant outcrops of rocks and large fallen trees. Courses will be longer and steeper. The elite courses will be particularly tough with lengths of 7.97km (W20E), 11.24km (M20E & W21E), and 15.25km (M21E).

Representing the NSW Stingers will be NOC Members: Nicola Blatchford (W20E), Malin Andersson (W21E), Kaitlin Radstaak (W21E), Josh Blatchford (M21E) & Peter Preston (M21E).

Also making the journey to compete in their respective age classes will be: Karen Blatchford, Carolyn Matthews & Gayle Quantock (W50A); Catherine Jones (W45AS); Scott Simson (M45A); Peter Berkholz (M45AS); Malcolm Roberts & Russell Blatchford (M55A); and Rudi Landsiedel (M60A).
