Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

    Run or walk, compete against yourself or others, or a fun family day out. Classic "forest" orienteering for all in the great outdoors. (Mar-Sept)
   Run, walk or push a pram to a 45 minute time limit. How many points can you get? (Oct-Feb)
    A great introduction to orienteering with fun courses in suburban parks & reserves. Also includes a night event. (Feb-Mar)
    Navigate around bush tracks and trails on your mountain bike. The     BOSS series offers 75 minute score & line+score events. (Oct-Mar)

38th ANNUAL HUNTER REGION SCHOOLS ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014.

Location/Map: "Blue Gum Regional Park" (1:7500)

Venue: From Newcastle Link Road At the traffic lights, turn towards Minmi on Woodford Street. At the next set of lights turn right into Minmi Rd, then after approximately 500m turn right into Blue Gum Hills Regional Park. Please park where directed at the cemetary parking lot and not the main car park.

OR From Newcastle, proceed to Wallsend, then take Minmi Road through Fletcher, turning left into Blue Gum Hills Regional Park. (The park entrance is approx 500m before the start of the houses at Minmi.

NOTE: NPWS do not allow us to use the main parking area today.

If you are uncertain which course to enter, please discuss this with the club coach Geoff Todkill at events.

For club regulars, entry fees can be paid on the day, but your entry must be received by 15th June.

Entries will be accepted from individuals or from teams of two only. Teams must be from the same school. They may be mixed age provided they run the more difficult course.

Competitors do two courses:

AGE COURSE (Age is at 31/12/2014. ie. The age turned this year!)

Course 1 Very Easy 1.8 km 12 12  
Course 2 Easy 2.0 km 13 13 Intermediate B
Course 3 Easy 2.5 km 14 14  
Course 4 Easy/Medium 3.0 km 15 15 Senior B
Course 5 Medium 3.5 km 16 16+  
Course 6 Hard 4.0 km 17+    

B Courses are available for beginners, but NOT available to previous placegetters of these courses.

This is a line course where competitors navigate around the course visiting controls in order.

SCORE COURSE

This is where you find as many controls as you can within a time limit of 45 minutes. Controls can be visited in any order.
There will be a choice of four graded "SCORE" courses with entry open to individuals or teams of two. Select courses based on experience rather than age. The courses are graded:

A: Difficult B: Moderate C: Easy D: Easy/Very Easy

Entries: Must be made in advance, by Friday 13th June. This pre-entry is essential to ensure that there will be sufficient maps available on the day.

Entry fee: $10 per person.

Entry forms will be sent to Hunter High Schools. Entries are also welcome from all NOC juniors and students who are coached by NOC members.
