36th Annual Hunter Schools Orienteering Championships

A cold but sunny day greeted us for this years championships at Stanford Scrubs and though numbers were down a little I think all students enjoyed themselves and we hope to see them again in the bush.

The Champion School was Toronto High School who also provided the most competitors on the day. Most of them were novices to Orienteering but sheer weight of numbers was enough to defeat Lambton High.

Scott Charlton won Mens 15 and Score A to be crowned Boy Champion, joining such notables as Alex Massey, Joshua Blatchford, Joshua Roberts, Peter and Rob Preston, Lee Coady and David Green.

Nicola Blatchford won Girls 16+ and with 2nd in Score B was crowned Girls Champion for the third year running.

My thanks goes to Geoff Todkill for setting the courses, printing and bagging maps, putting out controls and being available to assist in the bush. Without Geoff these Championships would not happen.

I would particularly like to thank the NOC club volunteers who helped to make the day run successfully. Carolyn Rigby and Cheryle Todkill at the Finish; Denis Lyons and Graham Fowler at the Start; Maria and Tamara Orr, Sally-Anne Henderson, Glen Charlton and Alex Massey for safety supervision on the course; and Alex Massey, Glen and Scott Charlton, Denis Lyons and Graham Fowler who helped collect controls; and Peter Newton for bringing the equipment and helping with set-up.

Finally thank you to the competitors. We had a safe successful day. Your behaviour and cooperation with all involved made our job much easier.
