Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

    Run or walk, compete against yourself or others, or a fun family day out. Classic "forest" orienteering for all in the great outdoors. (Mar-Sept)
   Run, walk or push a pram to a 45 minute time limit. How many points can you get? (Oct-Feb)
    A great introduction to orienteering with fun courses in suburban parks & reserves. Also includes a night event. (Feb-Mar)
    Navigate around bush tracks and trails on your mountain bike. The     BOSS series offers 75 minute score & line+score events. (Oct-Mar)

Start: Islington Park, Maitland Road, Islington

Parking: Maitland Road and surrounding streets. Please respect other park users and residents.
Facilities: Playground. 
Start times: Start at a time that suits you between 5:00pm - 6:30pm
Courses:
Free Mini Course (<1km)
Line Course (<2km) then Score Course (after completing Line Course) in a total of 45mins. Each control worth 1 point and 1 point lost per minute late after 45mins.
You can choose to do just the Line Course or just the Score Course if you wish.

Course closure: 7:25pm. 

 

Important Note: Newcastle Orienteering recommends that all competitors wear bright clothing or reflective gear throughout the season to enable drivers to see you especially if you are running near dusk. Please also take care when crossing roads and use recommended crossing points on busy roads. We also wish to remind competitors that listening to an ipod (or similar) while on course can be a distraction that may cause you to not hear an emergency warning or similar and as such are not allowed during these events for your safety.
