Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

a. Bring your charged up phone with MapRun6 (latest version is 6.5) installed and ready to go.
b. Sometimes the GPS calculations on your phone may be slightly out of alignment with reality! If you are sure you have visited a control site and can’t get MapRun to beep in acknowledgement then continue on your course and after you’ve finished submit a “Review Result (HITMO)” request using the menu. You will hopefully see the “missed” control(s) shown in red with a check box which if you click on it will request that this control(s) be included in your result. You might need to adjust the Tolerance from the default 30m to 40, 50 or even 60m.
c. If your GPS sensor goes to sleep and misses sections of your course then let the officials at the finish know (including any additional controls visited) and the results processors can consider making adjustments to the official results.

A Note About Safety: Newcastle Orienteering recommends that all competitors wear bright clothing or reflective gear throughout the season to enable drivers to see you especially if you are running near dusk. Please also take care when crossing roads and use recommended crossing points on busy roads. We also wish to remind competitors that listening to an ipod (or similar) while on course can be a distraction that may cause you to not hear an emergency warning or similar and as such are not allowed during these events for your safety.
