Summer Street Series Presentations Special Event - Jesmond Park - Wed 14 Feb

Join us at Jesmond Park on Wed 14th February for the Street Series Presentations Special Event and BBQ.
There will be a choice of a short line course (approx. 1.5km) or choose the 45min scatter course which starts with the line course then turn the map over to see how many more points you can get in the rest of the 45min time.
BBQ will be available from approximately 6:15pm onwards and please stay for the Presentations which will be held about 7:15pm. BBQ will be a gold coin donation for a sausage and salad in bread (vegan sausages available too).

Map/Location: The Skyline (Jesmond Park and surrounds)
Setter: Samantha Howe
Start: Jesmond Park, near the BBQ shelter and playground on the eastern side of the park
Parking: The carpark off Robinson Avenue (take care as there may be runners going through the carpark), on Robinson Ave and surrounding streets.
Facilities: Playground, Toilets, Water & BBQ!
Start times: Start at a time that suits you between 5:00pm and 6:30pm
Course: 45 minute score course that starts with a short line course (8 controls - 1.5km). You can choose to just do the line course around Jesmond Park - this is a good option for parents with younger kids who want to have a go.

We will be using electronic timing. If you have your own SI stick or P Card then please bring it along, otherwise you can hire a P Card or SI Stick for just $2. P Cards and SI Sticks will also be available for sale.
Note: The total number of controls is 29 which is more info than a P Card can hold - if you only have a P Card then bring it along and we will swap it for an SI Stick for free just to use for this event.

The scatter course will have controls through the surrounding streets, parkland and some in the bush reserve area. All controls in the bush reserve are located on trails, but some on the western side of the bush reserve require slightly more difficult navigation due to a complex track network. You may wish to bring a compass to aid navigation in that area.

If anyone would like to stay back for a short while afterwards to collect a few controls then that would be much appreciated. Thanks

Note: hey ho version 4! No event changes just updating for correct entry fees.

There is a new version of the street flyer available for download. There are no changes to the events - BUT there are changes to some of the rules - be sure to re download the flyer or visit the rules page in the Street Section of the website (click the street button on the homepage)

Setter's Report

Thanks to everyone who came and enjoyed the warmup event. We had 72 entries with quite a lot of new people and groups giving it a go and getting hooked. Two newbies had so much fun that they had to be chased down the street to tell them to stop after being out for almost an hour (they had misheard the instructions and didn't take their phone with them). I did give a finish time to a man with a pram passing through the finish out of curiosity (perhaps another future orienteer). There were quite a few prams and walkers so expect some good competition in those categories during this series. Congratulations to all the new orienteering parents this year too!
There was only one clue that was slightly wrong - I had written an address as 99 and not 99A. Apologies to anyone who was confused and thank you for letting me know. As it was just the warmup, I hadn't done my extra check of the controls that I usually do. Most people saw the clue and realised the error I think and points were awarded to all who went to that control.

So next week will be Maryland and the first of the street events in the series - see you there!

Killingworth - Sunday 29th May

NOTE: you can choose to participate in foot orienteering section only if you wish. While thereare no Blue or Green courses some of the scatter course controls are on or near tracks but sub-juniors would need supervision.

The club will be conducting two events at the same time on the weekend. The club minor event will be a scatter course of 45 minutes duration whereby you collect as many controls as possible in 45 minutes. The first scatter course has been set for competitors of all levels with catching features and tracks throughout the course. The map scale for the foot stages is 1:7500. The Duo Event will be doing the same course but there will be no time limit for Duo competitors. The start area for all competitors will be approximately 1km north of the electricity grid station at Killingworth.

For the Duo competitors an instruction sheet and course overview map is on the club website.

As the Duo course may take a few hours to complete all competitors are advised to bring along the water that they may need for the event and snacks/food for the duration. Completing the course carrying a small camelback would be to your advantage. There will be water available midway through the course.

We are in need of at least three more volunteers to assist with manning the start finish area. This event will incorporate a manned remote control as well as controls for competitors making a transition from foot to bike and finishing the event.

As it is a first time event , the organisers have tried to design the courses to allow all competitors to finish as well as providing some fun and challenging sections, the single tracks for the bike legs are still in good condition and the controls have been placed to give you some great riding!

Parking: due to wet weather parking will be on the verge of the road (Greg has brush-cut to allow you to get a bit off the road) unless you have a decent 4wd. Alternately those with MTB's could park back at the electricity complex and have a short warm-up ride to the assembly/start area.

Remember to bring along plenty of food and water!

Setter's Report:

I am happy that it is all over as there were times when you doubt yourself over the clues you have picked out (and then something happens and the clue changes and you have to find another one). The weather looked ominous on the day but as it turned out the weather was quite nice for running. I had several complaints about 2 of the clues and I apologise for this but most people dealt with it quite well by ticking both answers. I think overall most comments were positive.
I would like to thank Sam, David, Linda and Ken for helping at the finish (and setup) and other people who just did things without being asked. The ladies (and gent) on registration were wonderful as usual. Thanks to Peter for coming early with the tent even though we didn't use it.

Setters Report

Well not really, Malcolm is still away in Tasmania, so the honor falls to me to do a little writeup about the event. So lets get the elephant in the room out of the way before anything else. Yes, there was a mistake made with the clue sheet that unfortunately wasn't detected until we cracked open the bag they had come in only seconds before giving them out. It turned out the only possible answers on sheet were the actual answers - Whoops. But the 49 competitors, new and old, had a bit of a laugh and proceeded to have a run regardless. So now that that's out of the way I'd like to welcome all our new competitors who had a run with us today and for them next week we will introduce the second part of the warmup series - a complete clue sheet. See it was all a cunning plan to slowly ease you into the sport (should have opened with that really i guess oh well). Honourable mentions from the night were Stuart Kurtz for highest score for the 30min score course and Sharon Burgess for the best score for 45min (and of course being the only competitor in that class, very sly I must say).

So hopefully we will see you all (and Malcolm) next Wednesday at Waratah Rail (Mayfield), when we shall also have an extra hour of daylight to run in.

Course Setter: Justin Stafford
Start Times: 8:00am – 9:00am
Directions: Head west from the Glendale crossroads, turn right after 500 metres at the lights into Frederick St. Start is at end of Frederick st, park in the surrounding streets

From the Setter : Justin Stafford

Brush Creek is always a challenging place.  It is difficult navigationally because of the large spider web of constantly changing tracks.  It is difficult technically, because the majority of tracks are rutted and twisted due to motorbike activity.  It is demanding physically due to the hilly nature of the area.  Combine that with hot weather and I am stoked that, aside from control placement a little high, most riders enjoyed themselves and had a good ride!

I do feel for the plethora of riders who suffered breakages – tubes, tires, chains and even derailleur hangers…

I was also excited to be the setter for the first official Newcastle event to use the SI gear (the DuO is a NSW event).  This allowed for some interesting analysis, highlights including:

  • Every control was visited, with a reasonable spread – a good result in my books.
  • The most popular was 186 with all but two of the 41 riders punching – I assume due to the fact that it was an easy “enroute” control.
  • The least popular was 187 and 188 with only 4 visits – I guess this makes sense as they were a challenge to get to and of lower value.
  • Surprising to me was the large number of visits to 181 (top middle) and the low number of visits to the 2 and 3 point controls in the SE corner.

I have put together a visualisation showing the relative number of visitors to each control.

Thanks to Andrew, Geoff and Cheryle for their support with the event, and to Nicole, Tim, Steve and Sallyanne for control collection.

Qualifier 2

Location: Boomerang Park (Raymond Terrace)
Start Times: Starts between 5pm and 6:30pm (Course Closure 7:10pm)
Setter: David Messenger
Course: Long (~5km) and Short (~2km)

Directions: Car park at Freeth Street entrance to the park, corner of Freeth Street and Kangaroo Street. Parking may be required along Kangaroo Street if the car park becomes full

Facilities: TBA

Important Notice: This is an SI event. Please bring your SI stick if you own one otherwise you will need to rent one of the clubs.

REALLY Important Notice: Mosquito's are really prolific right now in the park so it is reccommended that you wear long sleeves, long pants and bring insect repellent.

From the desk of the Setter:

The rain stayed away for my first ever Park Event but it was hot and humid instead. The mosquitoes were relatively subdued until after event closure when they were vicious and in great numbers.

A brand new map crafted by Russell Rigby offered both open parklands but also the opportunity for more complicated navigation in forested areas. Some found this challenge fun, whilst others struggled with the difficult step-up from Street. An early prelude to the navigation required in Bush. Usually a new map is not revealed until you are out on the course but today it was displayed on the board to give some advance ‘warning’.

57 competitors took on the Long Course, with another 18 competitors on the Short Course.

Competitors rapidly found after the easier controls out in the open parkland that the forest needed more care and navigation. The splits reveal competitors issues with control navigation were highly varied with some forest controls problematic for some but not others (and no single control seen as problem to majority), whilst even some controls in the open parkland resulted in issues at times.

It was our first outing with use of locks and tethers … and within 10 minutes of putting out the last control the locals were spotted attempting to take a control away only to abandon their attempt due to the tether! Whilst this added substantially to the set-up time it is worth it to protect the sport-ident investment which allows the wealth of information for post event discussion and review.

I would encourage others to take on the role of setter and I learnt a lot about O-CAD and the challenges of mapping, course setting, layout and organisation and overall enjoyed the experience. It makes you appreciate how much effort is put in each week to allow our club to have a busy schedule for members enjoyment.

I also look forward to the fantastic map being used again … where I can experience for myself getting totally lost in the forest.

Start Setup – Thanks to Viola O’Connor, Russell Rigby, Carolyn Rigby, Peter Newton, Malcolm Roberts and any others I missed whilst I was out putting the remaining controls
Start / Finish – Thanks to Cheryl Todkill, Joy Guy, Malcolm Robertson and Peter Orr
Control Collection - Thanks to Alex Massey, Russell Rigby and Daniel Orr

Course Setter: Shane Jenkins
Start Times: 8:00am – 9:00am
Directions: From West Wallsend proceed west along Carrington Street and then Railway Street. Turn right into O’Donelltown Road and follow signs.

Important: This event uses Sportident, which will be available to hire on the day.

Format: This will be the standard BOSS format with a twist. The course is divided over 2 maps, which will be on one page, and competitors will be required to move between maps when they have either completed the first one or whenever they choose to. However, once you switch maps there will be no going back to the first map to get any missed controls.

The transition controls will be opposite the start and finish so you will need to return to the start (indicated by the start symbol on the map) once you have completed or done enough of the first map which is called 'The Mad Dash'. Once you have punched the transition control you may then proceed to the next transition control which is located opposite the finish (indicated by the finish symbol on the map). There is a five minute time limit to complete the transition. You then need to return to the finish when you are ready to finish and then proceed back to the registration area to download your results. In the event that you do not wish to head to the second map a finish control will be located at the download desk.

Note: Remember to stop your timer/stopwatch/gps during the transition as this time does not count towards your 75mins.

Facilities: None. The nearest toilets are at Chinaman's Hollow picnic area about 700m to the west along the main road.
Start times: Between 5pm and 6:30pm (with 2 minutes planning time before the start). Course closure at 7:25pm.

Setters Notes:

The map is divided into North and South part by the main Kurri Kurri to Cessnock road which will be extremely busy whilst most competitors are present. Hence there are only two crossing points for this road that are marked on the map: at the traffic lights 100m from the start, and at a section of road with a pedestrian refuge 300m to the West. So please take care crossing this road, no darting between traffic.

Getting caught at the lights won't be luck of the draw, it will happen for just about everyone. There is an easy 2 pointer 200m away to help you better manage your time. As further encouragement to use just the official crossing points, the control positions have been selected to leave a big dead zone. The idea is to do either North or South part of the course then transition through traffic lights and assembly area to the other half of the map. If you are a minute or so late don't worry, it is not worth getting hit by a car.

The map is also divided by a railway line which is so infrequently used that the pedestrian footbridge has been demolished, replaced by an un-signalled un-gated footpath across the tracks. Use this public crossing to transition between controls north and south of the railway. Again, control sites have been selected to encourage crossing at just this point, there is no advantage crossing anywhere else.

We will be using a new system of electronic timing which will mean more accurate times and scores, less work for volunteers and fast results publication for competitors. If you have your own SI stick or P Card then please bring it along to all street events, otherwise you can hire a P Card or SI Stick at each event for just $2. P Cards and SI Sticks will also be available for sale.

Important Note: Newcastle Orienteering recommends that all competitors wear bright clothing or reflective gear throughout the season to enable drivers to see you especially if you are running near dusk.

Park Final

Setters
Report:

When Carolyn & I first visited Booragul Public School to look at mapping it for the Active After School Communities program in late 2011 the possibilities of the area for a Park Tour map were obvious. Thanks to the cooperation of the staff at Booragul PS and Lake Macquarie HS this became a reality.

As mapper and setter this felt almost like a perfect event for me - happy with map, lots of support from landowners & no access issues (and the school P&C put on a sausage sizzle), an area that was scenic and appropriate for the standard of course, near perfect weather, event ran smoothly with involvement of many club members, LOTS OF HAPPY COMPETITORS, and a few helpful suggestions - & enough volunteers for control pick-up so that I didn't have to get any. Thanks to everybody for your assistance - hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

With the absence of some of "gun" runners, either because of non-qualification or Formula 1 commitments, the A Grade final opened up. Early starter Shane Trotter took the lead with 26:22, but then Martin Quirke improved on that by half a minute. Andrew Morris took out the top position with a late run, even allowing for some creative navigation around control 11 on the marsh. Jenny Enderby won the Women's A Grade, and will get the Women's Park Trophy when we track it down.
Geoff Todkill thought he was going well until he arrived at Control 16 for the first time (unfortunately after he had completed the loop around 17, 18,19 & 20), so resigned himself to a MP result.

Angus Roberts won B grade with a time that would have placed him mid-field in A Grade, while first starter David Messenger never really settled after a 90 degree mistake out of the start box for his worst run of the Tour ("WHY is he going that way???)

Michael Goode won C Grade with a 4 minute lead over Sonia Brown, and Graham Fowler had a 53 second lead on (a hopeful) Jon Sayers in D grade.

On the Short Course Graeme Taplin won E Grade convincingly from Kate Alborough and Peter Newton.

Fastest time for the day was by Steve Todkill, who did not have enough events to qualify for A Grade, and visited some haunts familiar from his school days on the run around the high school.

As part of the arrangements with the school Carolyn ran a Young Orienteers course around the school buildings and playground, with miniature control flags and animal pictures instead of control codes. This did not stop at least one senior orienteer from trying to find the SI punch (is that you Craig?). Eleven groups of kids ran the course, 7 from the school and 4 from the club. This course used the original school maps (1:1000 scale) compiled for the AASC program that first raised our interest in the area, completing the cycle.

The P&C was very happy with the results from their sausage sizzle, selling out of cakes and drinks and almost all of the sausages. If the club uses the area for a larger event in the future (State League sprint?) they certainly would like to be involved.

Thanks once again to everyone involved in making the event run so smoothly - Malcolm (SI), Cheryle, Joy and Maria (admin), David, Peter O, Peter N (set-up), Andrew, Kate, Greig, Sonia, Schyler, Imogen, Axel, Ingrid, Alan, David (control pick-up) - so many, sorry if we've missed anyone.

Newcastle Night Championships

Setters Report:

Thanks to everyone who came and had fun running around in the dark. Especially those who braved the park with just a small light (or none at all and tried running on map memory between streetlights).
I tried to set courses which gave the option of no bush-bashing but a few people found some good shortcuts and some found shortcuts that took longer than staying on the trails.
Also there are some very interesting ruins hidden in the park that I tried to show (mostly on the long course as they were a bit far for the short course and harder to find). To learn more about the history of Rathmines Park speak to Alec at "Friends of Rathmines" - Email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or Phone: 02 4975 1973. They are a community group who look after and encourage recreational use of the park.
Thanks also to everyone who helped as I couldn't have done it without you and thanks to Kendall for the fantastic free lighting. I also apologise for forgetting to print separate control sheets (though this didn't seem to slow many people down looking at some of the very fast results).
I hope everyone enjoyed the event and I had a lot of fun setting. Thanks, Sam.

Format and Rules

• The tour will consist of four (4) events. The first three events will be qualifying events. A competitor’s best two results from these events will be tallied to produce a qualifying score. On the basis of this score competitors will be put into grades. (See Calculating the Grades)

• In the final event competitors will run in their grade. Results from this event will determine the overall placing in each grade. Competitors that have not qualified are still welcome to run, they will be in the “Enter On Day” category

Scores for each qualifying event will be calculated as a percentage of the winner’s time.example

• The courses will be line courses (point to point) so competitors must visit the controls in the order specified by the course setter. (However you still have choice on how to approach and navigate between controls).

• There will be two different length courses offered at each event. The short course will be about 1.5 – 2 km in length while the long course will be about 4 - 5km in length (where possible).

Start times for the events are between 5pm and 6:30pm.

Course closure is 7:10pm. Please choose a start time to ensure you will finish by this time. (The organisers still need to pick up controls after this.)

SportIdent timing is used for all Park events, so remember to bring your SI stick. (SI stick hire available at all events.)

• All private property and any other areas so marked on the map are out of bounds. Competitors found not observing this rule will be disqualified.

• All competitors must report to the finish (so that search parties are not sent out!)

• Any queries should first go to the organiser for the day and then if necessary to the series organiser.

Enjoy it!

Calculating the Grades

The grades for the Newcastle Park Tour are determined as follows.

• The grades for each course (i.e the long course and the short course) are determined separately.

• At each qualifying event, competitors points are calculated via the formula

winner's time/competitor's time x 100

• After the conclusion of the qualifying rounds the competitors are ranked according to their best two results. From these rankings the competitors are then put into grades.
Note: Competitors must have completed at least two rounds on the same course to qualify.

• For each course the number of grades used depends on the number of qualifiers as follows:

Number of Qualifiers Number of Grades
0-19 1
20-35 2
36-51 3
52-64
4
65-80 5
81-96 6

• The numbers within each grade will be as even as possible with the excess going into the lower grades first.

For example if the long course has 43 qualifiers, then there will be 3 grades, A, B and C, with 14 in A grade, 14 in B grade and 15 in C grade. If the long course has 44 qualifiers then the numbers would be 14 in A grade, 15 in B grade and 15 in C grade. And so on.

The grades for the short course will be determined independently from the grades for the long course.

Summer Street Series Basic Rules

In entering an orienteering event, competitors recognise that the activity has certain inherent risks due to its conduct in the urban and natural environments. Included in these risks are injury due to rough terrain and obstacles and the effects of heat, cold and exhaustion. Competitors are also aware that there is no personal accident insurance on their participation in the sport and that they take part at their own risk. The Full Policy is available here (pdf)

The course is a 45 minute score course.

Competitors will receive their map 2 minutes before their start time.

Official Start Times are between 5pm and 6:30pm

Course Closure is 7:25pm. Any competitors not back before then will be disqualified.

Late Penalties:
- Minus 1 point for every minute or part thereof up to 5 minutes late
- Minus 1 point for every 30 seconds or part thereof from 5 mins late onward
- Score of 0 if more than 10 minutes late

Early Bonuses:
If all controls have been visited then plus 1 point for every full minute early

It is the competitor's responsibility to check results before leaving an event. Only in exceptional circumstances will results be changed after the competition day.

All private property and any other areas so marked on the map are out of bounds. Competitors found not observing this rule will be disqualified.

Guessing answers to control clues is considered poor etiquette (and is not in the spirit of the event).

All competitors must report to the finish (so that search parties are not sent out!)

A competitor's ten best results will be tallied to produce their overall series total (No points will be awarded for course setting).

A full write up of the scoring can be found here

On Sept 8 and 9 a band of enthusiastic mountain bike orienteers descended on Clarencetown, in the Hunter Valley, for last two rounds of the NSW MTBO Super Series. The weekend was hosted by Newcastle Orienteering Club and consisted of a Middle Distance event in Uffington State Forest on Saturday and a Long Distance event in Wallaroo State Forest on Sunday morning.

This event was the first time we used the newly purchased SI equipment. Thus behind the scenes there was much discussion of logistics and processes.  Unfortunately, teething issues on Saturday meant that splits were lost for publishing and the organisers offer apologies to the competitors for this.

Out in the forests and the riding was good since the areas had dried up considerably over the last month although on Sunday there was still some water on the tracks (which was mapped!) that had to be taken into consideration. Steven Todkill and Hilary Ellis took out the Mens and Womens Course 1 respectively, on both days. David Ellis took out the “Epic Fail” award by injuring himself Saturday morning while surfing and then melting his wheel on the journey up to the events by having his bike too close the exhaust pipe! He did however assist the organisers throughout both events. Well done Dave!

The course setters,Malcolm Roberts and Andrew Power would like to thank all of those members from the Newcastle club who helped make the events a success, in particular Denis Lyons on Saturday and Caroline Taurany on Sunday.

Newcastle Orienteering Club Bike Orienteering Summer Series Rules Series 9 (2017/2018)

NB Changes to the rules from 2016/2017.

1 Basic Rules

1.1 You must ride on mapped tracks or designated clear areas only. You are not allowed to make new tracks or take short cuts through the bush.

1.2 You and your bike must stay together at all times.

1.3 You must wear a helmet at all times before, during and after the event whilst on your bike.

1.4 You must carry water with you.

1.5 You must obey normal road rules and ensure your bike is in safe working order.

1.6 All competitors must report to the finish so that search parties are not sent out!

2 Event Description

2.1 There will be two maps, a LineScore75 map and AllScore75 with all the same controls on the maps.

2.2 The LineScore75 map will be an A4 double sided map; a line course on one side and a score course on the other side, the total time allowed is 75 minutes.

2.3 On the LineScore75 the line course has to be completed before the score course. Line course controls are to be visited in order.

2.4 The line course will have between 7 and 9 controls, each valued at 2 points. On completion of the line course the remainder of the 75 minutes is to be used on the score course. Controls will be valued either 1, 2 or 3 points as indicated by the colour of the control on the map, Green 1 point, Orange 2 points and Pink 3 points. Score controls can be visited in any order.

2.5 Failure to complete Line course on the LineScore75 map.

2.5.1 If a competitor is unable to complete the line course within the 75 minute time limit then they should head to the finish. Their score will be the total of the line controls visited in the correct order. With no penalties for those missed. They cannot score points on the score course whilst returning to the finish. Late time penalties will still apply.

2.5.2 If a competitor is unable to find a line control (or realizes that they have accidently missed a control) then they may abort the line course and continue to the score course. No points will be awarded for any part of the line course but points will be awarded for the score course.

2.6 The AllScore75 map will be a 75 minute all score event (no line course) using exactly the same controls as the LineScore75 but the map will be one sided with all controls.

2.7 Each competitor has the choice to ride either course, the LineScore75 or the AllScore75. Please note clauses 2.12 and 2.13.

2.8 Controls will be valued either 1, 2 or 3 points as indicated by the colour of the control on the map, Green 1 point, Orange 2 points and Pink 3 points. Score controls can be visited in any order.

2.9 Two minutes prior to your start time, you will be given the map. You can use this time to attach the map to your board and plan both the line course and/or the score course.

2.10 Competitors will incur a 1 point penalty for each minute or part thereof they are late, down to a score of zero.

2.11 Competitors will receive a 1 point bonus for each full minute early if they punch all controls on the map.

2.12 The series will consist of six BOSS events. A competitor’s best four results from these events will be tallied to produce an overall series total. (Course setters will receive an average of their best three results for the event they set).

2.13 If you have been classified as an Elite rider (by the BOSS Coordinator) you will not be awarded a podium place if you ride the AllScore75.

2.14 Individual scores for each event will be calculated as a percentage of the winners score

2.15 Competition categories for each series will be for Women, Men, Rookie & eBike.

Its a Wrap

Newcastle orienteering was invited to provide a stall at Bluegum Hills Regional Park for Bio Diversity Day. In addition we have been working with National Parks to develop a permanent orienteering course in the park. Our main focus for the day was to promote orienteering and provide a short orienteering course for the kids, mum’s and dad’s.

The expected numbers were unknown but it was obvious by the crowds arriving at opening time that we were in for a busy day. We had a steady stream of family groups taking on the challenge of the permanent course with Carolyn Rigby, Kerry Bacon and Joy Guy giving instructions on how to tackle the course. Russell Rigby, Denis Lyons and Greg Bacon were the back up when things were a little busy but the girls were in control most of the time.

It was a very hot day but the kids were very enthusiastic with a few even running around the course. Quite a number of the kids had also been involved with the School Orienteering programme organised by Carolyn Rigby. We gave out nearly 100 maps on the day with well in excess of 130 kids and parents trying the course. It was also good to meet with some of the landholders that give us approval to run events on their land.

Our helpers on the day enjoyed the activities and the time seemed to fly! With free drinks and free steak sandwich for lunch it was a good day out.

Results - RESULTS ARE UP. Routegadget is up. Result may be delayed again as we need to process Week 1 again due to a missed result. On a related note please ensure you hang your block with the grey slip on the results board once you have been given a time and a score. Scores are currently not collated until these are collected at the end of the event. So no grey slip - no score! The responsibility for this has always been the competitors.

Someone told me today that there was less than 100 days to Christmas.... Well then its time to launch the Xmas 5 day website! Check out the logo to the left and click and explore to your hearts content. If you wish to help out at this major carnival contact the organiser, Geoff Peel. His details are at the bottom of pretty much every page.

That this coincides with club members travelling north to spread the word of Xmas in Queensland (or compete in Auschamps - one of the two) Good luck to them all anyway.

I have a weird request now - I want images of club shirts please. The older the better. As psrt of the history of the club I am putting together a page for the various club uniforms over time - so information about when it was worn and introduced would be appreciated. Anyone attending our club events will see a variety of shirts being worn so its time to enshrine then in a chronicle (or web page)

Club members Sam and Kendall have had a little boy named Ben. Another orienteering dynasty takes shape and our junior ranks grow.

Merry Xmas.... too soon?

Start times: Mass Starts at 5:15pm and 5:45pm (with 2 minutes planning time before the start)

We will be using electronic timing which will mean more accurate times and scores, less work for volunteers and fast results publication for competitors.

Please also take care when crossing roads and use recommended crossing points on busy roads. We also wish to remind competitors that listening to an ipod (or similar) while on course can be a distraction that may cause you to not hear an emergency warning or similar and as such are not allowed during these events for your safety.

Wet weather prevented us from running this last month. It's been rescheduled to Saturday, May 28 from 1.30-3.30 pm. Park at the south end of Station St., Whitebridge. If the weather's dicey, call Ian Dempsey (49435790) It might also be a good idea to advise Ian that you wish to attend. You can come even if you didn't attend the theory part of the workshop.

You'll need:
- A mapping board around 30 x 30cm. This needs to be firm but lightweight and could be Masonite, Perspex or polystyrene (the latter covered with adhesive sheet).
- Mapping pencils that roughly correspond to an orienteering map’s main colours of black, brown, blue, yellow and green. Clutch action pencils with 0.5mm coloured leads are good, but sharp coloured pencils can also work. - A baseplate or thumb compass, a short ruler, an eraser and masking tape. You can bring a GPS unit that reads grid references from a topographic map, but it’s not essential.

*Update*

So yeah - website is back to being pretty. still some work to do especially with the archive areas. The top menu will also get an overhaul at some point.

Hi Web Editor here,

As you might have noticed the website has developed a glitch. To fix this I had to turn off off our pretty website and return to a very bland version. It turns out the template we were using is not compatible with the latest version of the web content management system we use (even though it said it was!).

I am working on getting the website back to its previous glory - better than before hopefully. So please be patient.

Thanks

The 24th Summer Street Series is starting soon!

Due to daylight savings not starting until the long weekend, the first event will be on Wednesday 9th October.

Warm Up Event 1 will be on Wed 9th October at National Park. The start will be at the corner of Smith Street & Dumaresq Street, Newcastle West.

Warm Up Event 2 will be on Wed 16th October at Brickworks Park, Iranda Grove, Wallsend.

The warm up events will have mass starts at 5:15pm and 6pm and competitors will have 30mins (plus 1 minute planning time before the start).

The full list of events will be added to the website this week as well as the event flyer.

The walking category will be available again for those who prefer to walk. Now with the additional rule that people with prams who compete in this category will be allowed to jog or run while pushing the pram without being disqualifed due to the extra physical and navigational difficulty.

We hope to see everyone soon!

Results are in - go check out the Middle distance results and the Long Results

Start lists for this weekends State Championships are now available in Eventor. Don't forget there is double indemnity this weekend. You must sign before competing - read the latest bulletin for more information so you (and your family) don't get caught out.

Remember if you haven't entered there are limited enter on day slots available for each day. But once they are gone they are gone!

Hello everyone, this is your chance to experience orienteering at it’s best in two great areas over two days. There is still time to enter the standard courses/classes through Eventor or you have the option of entering on the day. At $15 for a club member or $20 for a non member you have the opportunity to enter either the Very easy, Easy, Moderate or Hard 7 courses. Course lengths and timings are listed in the final Bulletin posted on the event website or on Eventor.

It would be great if you could also help out on the day especially with settng up, packing up and parking marshalls.

You could also have a chance to go into the Lucky Draw for some great prizes, with food and refreshments also being available on the day.

The next batch of Newcastle Tops are very close to coming - but not close enough for those attending Tasmania. However, we've made arrangements to get some delivered to Tassie so you can show the club colours while you run down the opposition. But to get one you have to let Karen Blatchford know ASAP (before 6:00pm 19th Sept 2012). This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to make arrangements. Otherwise the tops will be available at Street Series events, Eraring and the Bush series presentations right after.
