No fewer than nine of the eighteen available places in the 2009 NSW Schools Orienteering Team, 'The Carbines', have been awarded to Newcastle junior members following the final set of selection races contested over the QBIII long weekend.

State selectors Hilary Wood, Geoff Todkill and Robyn Pallas would not have had an easy time during deliberations for the 2009 team, with competition for a limited number of positions having commenced at NSW SL events 4 and 5 at Hilltop and Windellama on the 2nd and 3rd of May. The announcement of the team for the 'Bushrangers '09' tour was made by Hilary Wood at the conclusion of the QBIII Presentation Ceremony at the Newcastle University, and brought a smile to the face of many Newcastle juniors.

Congratulations to: Nicola Blatchford, Rhiana Roberts (junior girls) Lewis Berkholz, Angus Roberts (junior boys) Eleanor Ross, Sally-Anne Henderson (senior girls) Alex Massey, Josh Blatchford, Glen Charlton (senior boys)

The juniors selected thoroughly deserve their places in the 2009 team. Any devotee of 'Attackpoint' would know that all in this group have an active AP 'trog', and work very hard at their fitness and their sport. But there is a whole lot more to the selection success of our juniors this year.

Club Coach Geoff Todkill conducts an active coaching program, both in the form of specific coaching days, and consultation before and after courses at club minor events. Peter Charlton, as the coordinator of the Newcastle Junior Squad stepped up to the plate to address a void in training opportunities for our enthusiastic local juniors over the past two years. To put the icing on the cake, our club can be proud of the quality events program offered over almost 12 months of the year.

The opportunities for motivated juniors to complete quality orienteering courses on quality maps, confident in the quality organisation the club has a reputatiuon for is also reflected in these selection achievements. The 2009 'Carbines' (pictured below) will compete in the Australian Orienteering Championships Carnival in Central Victoria from the 26th of September through to the 4th of October.
