Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

from event setter Shane Jenkins.....

Lone Pine Pond (I mean road)

Given the recent weather there was only a small turnout of 32 riders who were willing to brave the flooded tracks and happily everyone came back in with smiles, if a little covered in mud and wet. Having tried to set a fast course all I needed was the weather the hold off and a few bright sunny days - what I got was a week of rain and in some places a metre of water over the tracks. Luck did shine on the competitors though as the waters did recede overnight and was nowhere near as bad as when I was placing the controls the day before.

Most riders greatly underestimated time and distance due to the watery conditions and many were late in returning. If only I had placed a camera near 2D - I would win funniest home videos for sure this year. A submerged pothole (which I failed to find) sent several riders flying, one who shall remain unnamed hit it twice.

From series co-ordinator Andrew Haigh....

"Only the BOSS gets the sunny days"
The second event of the Boss series took place on a new map north of the Wallaroo Map (used in previous years). The Weather on the day was perfect blue skies, but the course had suffered some what from a week of near continuous rain. Shane Jenkins set an excellent course using the limited tracks in the area very effectively. It was an impressive effort to get all the controls set out the day before in shocking conditions. Malcolm Roberts returned several kilos heavier and almost unrecognisable, but with enough points to win the event. Carolyn Matthews one of only three riders in the top twenty who got back on time took first place in the womens. It's a shame there wasn't a video camera set up south of 2D, a deep under water pothole saw many riders diving over the handle bars for a mud bath.
Thanks to all those who helped, especially those hardy souls who went back out for further punishment to collect the controls.
The next BOSS event is in only three weeks at Killingworth (18th Dec) don't forget to preenter. May the sun continue to shine.
