Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

From the series organiser

More sunshine for BOSS.

Due to a last minute cancellation of the planned event at Kilaben Creek, the event was moved to Uffington State forest, Denis Lyons produced an excellent course with a little assistance from myself. We were glad to see that 47 people made the trip up to Clarence Town which is a little further away from Newcastle than our usual events.

The heavy rain during the week slowed down an otherwise fast map, at least this prevented the top riders from clearing the course. Steve Todkill won the day missing only a single one pointer, Carolyn Matthews won the women’s.

Thanks for control collection by: Greg Bacon, Nicole Haigh, Denis Lyons, Malcolm Roberts, Carolyn Matthews and Tim Hackney

Thanks to the Raywards for accommodation on the Saturday night.

BOSS Series Wrap up.

Attendance for the third series was down a little probably due to wet conditions. It has been a wet summer and has rained the preceding days before every event, but not once did it actually rain during an event. On a positive note female participation was up from 16% to 24%.

Once again the series came down to the last event to decide the series winners. Last year Malcolm was pushed into second place by a mere 0.53 of a point, this year he came closer to winning, but ultimately was pipped by 0.42 of a point to Series winner Steve Todkill, Some how I clawed my way into third place due to regulars Damian and Alex missing several of the events.

The Women’s event was also close but Carolyn Matthews won her third event of the season, which was enough to clinch the series ahead of Nicole Haigh and Sam Howe.

Only 7 competitors achieved the (Imaginary) Toblerone award for attending every event. Geoff Todkill, Nicole Haigh, Andrew Haigh, Shane Jenkins, Viola O’Connnor, Denis Lyons and Tim Tew.

Thanks to the course setters for the series Denis Lyons, Shane Jenkins, Andrew Power, Justin Stafford and Greg Bacon.

Thanks to Cheryl Todkill for looking after the start desk at every event. Not only has this provided a level of consistency otherwise not possible, but has made the day much more enjoyable for the course setters.

Due to the nature of Mountain Bike Orienteering it is important not to over use our maps as it is difficult to produce substantially different courses each year. Due to the enthusiasm and immense time and effort of Denis Lyons and Greg Bacon we had the luxury of riding on four new maps this season. BOSS 4 planning is already well underway and is due to start in late October. We already have two new maps being prepared.

Next season I am considering an ‘Elite Category’ and some long awaited Series Trophies.

And a final thanks to everybody who attended.
