Five Newcastle club members made the trip to Woodford in Queensland for the weekend of 18th/19th August to compete in the Queensland MTBO championships. The events were held in the Woodford State Forest about an hour north of Brisbane. The weather was excellent for riding with clear sky and the temperature just making it into the 20’s. The tracks were mostly dry and relatively fast, though some track gradings had changed since the last map update and some route choices were a lot slower than anticipated.
The championships consisted of a middle distance event on the Saturday afternoon and a long distance event on the Sunday morning, with the lowest combined time for both events determining the champion.
Newcastle riders won four categories.
- Jenny Enderby took out the Women’s Open in her first serious attempt at MTBO. Jenny recorded a second in the middle distance and first in the long distance.
- Graham Fowler took out the Men’s 70 with a first in both events.
- Greg Bacon managed to put it all together two days in a row to take out the Men’s 60 with a first in both events.
- Andrew Power took out the Men’s 50 with a first in both events.
