Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

They're off and racing

Overcast cool conditions and a flat map eased competitors through the first street event of the 08/09 series. The Swansea map only features one contour and many competitors ran at near top pace throughout the 45 minutes to clock up some impressive distances. Fortunately there was no afternoon heat with the overcast sky and possibly the adjacent lake keeping things relatively cool.

Thanks to Colin Bailey for setting the course which I found a challenge in regards to optimising the visiting order of the various control sites.

At this early stage it looks like youth has it's nose just ahead of experience but it's close especially in the Men's category with Josh Blatchford continuing his recent winning form, but only on time not points. Kim van Netten ran well to take out the Women's category and placed a repectable 8th overall.

Total Competitors: approx 90
