From course setter David Kitchener
Over 40 hardy souls braved the wind, the rain and the traffic to take part in SSS5, held on our westernmost map at Telarah & Rutherford. While the rain persisted for nearly all the event, enthusiasm was barely dampened as competitors wrestled with an intricate network of cul-de-sacs, paths, floodways and rights of way, which offered significant route choice challenges. Meanwhile, those who visited 3D had the additional challenge of finding a clue having been given the wrong house number. The organiser was later heard to remark that “gross stupidity” on his part was to blame and was last seen looking for a sword to fall on. Marking was allowed to be a little elastic, given a high number of soggy, illegible answer sheets, but hopefully most people went home happy. Sincere thanks are due to Joy Guy, Jeff Guy, Cheryl Todkill, Peter Newton and Carolyn & Russell Rigby for freely offering to help out in truly miserable conditions, as well as all those who demolished the event site in record time at the end. Hopefully Carrington will offer more clement weather next week!
