Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

Over 100 contestants turned out for the opening round of the 2010 Newcastle Park Tour Series yesterday afternoon at picturesque Speers Point Park.
A mild slightly overcast evening presented perfect running conditions to tackle either the 2.5km short or 4.5 km long courses on offer.

Fastest over the short distance was Kieran Slatter, clocking 15:06. Fist female was Tracey Roxin in 18:01.

The longer course saw some blistering times set by the front runners. Fastest overall was promising junior Alex Massey who stopped the clock at 18:06 giving him a very narrow winning margin of only 4 seconds over Street Series Champion Steven Todkill. Stu Adams was only an additional 15 seonds further adrift in 3rd.
It was also pleasing (and somewhat surprising) to see Australian JWOC representative Josh Blatchford on the comeback trail after recent corrective surgery sitting in 4th place, only 40 seconds off the winning pace.
Seems like it's going to be another fiercly contested series in the men's category.

Recently named Lake Macquarie "Masters Sportsperson of the Year 2009", Jenny Enderby, showed her form winning the womens category in 22:24 with over a minutes margin to second placed Karen Blatchford.
NSW Junior Stinger, Elly Ross ran into third placing.

Thanks to Glen Charlton for setting a great first off park event and also to the rest of the Charlton gang for helping him run the proceedings on the day.
