Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

The courses were contested on a new version of the "Newcastle University" map, an area not used for probably over a decade. Course setter Ian Dempsey provided us with a brand new version of this map and it's terrific. The area gives a great mix of buildings, open areas and even pockets of bushland all adding to the complexity of the map and thus the difficulty of forming route choices on the run. This area is so good that we might investigate halting further use and saving it for State or even national level event next year.
