Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

Freemans Waterholes - Jigadee Jog

After the heat of the week, then the rain of the previous 48 hours, the weather was ideal for a bush event - dry with the temperature in the high teens. The only downside was this combination also brought out a bumper number of leaches. There was a good turnout of orienteer despite it being the middle of the school holidays as well as a long weekend.

With it being a minor event Robert Preston started to help get everybody's mind into the summer street series mode by setting a score course in place of the harder courses. Josh Batchford brought his form back for Queensland to be the best competitor. You can see his route here.

Thanks to Robert Preston for not only setting the courses but providing pre-marked and bagged maps for everyone. Thanks to his Julia Preston and Joy Guy at the start/finish, and to Mark Simons, Arthur Kingsland, Denis Lyons and Tim Tew who helped Robert collect the controls so everyone could be on the way home before 2pm!
