Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

The Curse of Cameron Park

Event: Minor
Location: Cameron Park (Edgeworth)
Entries: 50
Weather: wet – extremely wet

Sunday saw a tradition of wet events at Cameron Park continue. The figures currently stand at 5 out of 6 events held there in the last few years being greatly effected by precipitation. You can also add at least one wet coaching day from earlier this year. Competitor numbers were obviously negatively affected but an encouragingly high number did brave the wet (and muddy) conditions.

Standout run of the day was from regular street and park orienteer Stuart Kurtz having his first true bush hit-out. The ease at which he completed the orange course suggests that he may be a natural.

Glenn Burgess headed the 6.6 km Long Red field while Karen Blatchford was best placed woman on the 4.2 km Medium Red.

Thanks to Denis Lyons for another set of great challenging courses and to Joy Guy for organisation.

Note: During my course I had the opportunity to wear one of the latest hi-tech “gadgets” currently in vogue with many orienteers around the world, a Garmin 305 GPS recorder. Keep an eye out for a short report and my actual route overlayed on the map in the near future. It is very revealing.
