NOY series commences
Event: NOY1
Location: Hawk Mount - Awaba
Entries: 66
Weather: Humid
The club’s traditional bush season opened yesterday with the first event in the “Newcastle Orienteer of the Year" (NOY) series on the “Hawk Mount” map at Awaba. Numbers were good but reduced with some opting to do the “Loop the Lake” bike ride while some of our elite competitors were away contesting the National Orienteering League event in Victoria.
The Denis Lyons set courses proved to be challenging for many competitors, possibly having rusty navigational skills after the bush off-season, but were well set, offering multiple route choices on many legs.
Rob Vincent (1st Long Red) has taken an early lead in the men’s with Margaret Peel (4th Medium Red) possibly taking the lead in the women’s series.
We had two competitors that became navigationally embarrassed (that’s a nice way of saying they were lost) yesterday. Realising they were totally lost they stayed calm, found the nearest road and stayed on it. We had no trouble finding them when we realised that they were obviously having some difficulty and commenced searching for them.
Thanks to Denis and his helpers for a great event.
