Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

Courses

Very Easy 1:4000 Normal point to point course, following tracks, fences and streamer trails. A good chance to learn the difference between open (yellow) and bush (white).
Easy 1:4000 Normal point to point course with some controls just off the handrail features (tracks, fences, watercourses and rough open areas). Lots of controls to practice orientation of the map.
Moderate and Hard 1:5000 Courses will consist of four component activities over two stages. Those participants wanting a shorter activity should do one of the two stages or do some of the four components non-competitively.

Moderate and Hard – Stage 1

1. Map Memory: View a control site on a map at the start and remember enough features to get to that site without a map. The next control site will then have a fixed map showing the location of the following control site, and so on until you reach the change-over control where you will collect a map and start the line course. For this activity you will have control descriptions including numbers and features.

2. Line Course: Follow a line on the map and punch any controls along that line which match the code number on your control descriptions. There will be no feature descriptions on the control description sheet.

At the end of stage 1, download and record your time to record your stage 1 result.

Clear / Check and report to the start again, with your map, for Stage 2.

Moderate and Hard – Stage 2
Important: for those competing in Stage 1 & 2, Stage 1 must be completed before Stage 2 can be started.

3. Point to Point Course: Visit controls in numerical order. At the change-over control, start the Score Course. You will have control descriptions including features but not numbers.

4. Score Course: visit all controls in any order you choose. You will have control descriptions with numbers and features.
Download and record your result for Stage 2. If you also competed in Stage 1, you will receive an overall result.
