Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

Location/Map: New Map "BALICKERA" 1:10 000

The area is a part of Wallaroo SF and joins the north-west part of the recently used "HAMBURGER TRAIL" map.Only a small eastern section of this map was burned at the end of last year. The area has some steep sided hills with some deeply cut watercourses. There are areas of open runnable forest, along with areas of low vegetation and large sections of slow to very slow vegetation to add to route choice planning. There is some man-made detail along the sides of a large (former) quarry.
The area has previously been used for mountain bike orienteering.

Directions: Head north from Hexham. Aprox. 13.5km after the Heatherbrae roundabout turn left into Italia Rd. After approx. 2.7km, slow down to turn left into Hunter Water Corporation's Balickera Park for parking and toilets. Park just off the sealed road. Assembly will be near the entry point.

Planner: Denis Lyons
