Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

Minor Event - Fairley Dams

Venue : O’Donnelltown Rd, O’Donnelltown

Map : Fairley Dams 1:7500

Terrain: This area has not been used for orienteering for several years due to farming leases over the land. The area is on the south side of O’Donnelltown and was a mine site with two large dams in the centre of the old workings. The terrain is mainly open bushland with some heavier re growth around the creeks near the start and is surrounded by hills leading up to Sugarloaf. The course area will be mainly in the open areas with some sections around the rocky hills. Denis Lyons has been working on updating the map for the club. This area has everything. This event will be held in conjunction with the DuO which will include a stand alone MTBO leg which will also be part of the Super Series. The foot course will be a line course with a score course included. As you complete the line course you must also collect a number of controls worth 1,2 or 3 points. The best of both worlds!

Courses: Four courses available. Hard 1: Line course 4.1k and approx 2k score course Hard 2: Line course 3.2k and approx 1.5k score course Hard 3: Line course 2.7k and approx 1k score course Easy : Line course 1.2k and approx .5k score course

Entries: Enter on the day. Newcastle orienteering Club members $7.00
