Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

Park tour qualifier No2: Wednesday 29th February
Venue: Warabrook Station
Course Planner: Ian Dempsey
Start times: 5pm - 6:30pm (Course closure 7:10pm)
Directions: At the eastern end of University Drive, Waratah West, turn north into Wirra Crescent. Park in the unselaed car parks either side of Wirra Crescent about 150m in from the main road, before the sharp left hand turn ar Ray Watt Oval.

Long course will include a second loop printed on the back of the map. No facilities. Water provided. Bring insect repellent.

SPECIAL NOTES: For those competitors who think they might be running in the elite level sprint event at the NOL in May there is an embargo on the University. Thus they should NOT run in this event. Special consideration will be given to those competitors who do not make their anticipated grade for the final Park Tour event as a result of this embargo.

From the desk of the course setter:

Despite a shower of rain at 4pm that may have been a sign of things to come, the event was held in fine, albeit humid, weather. Thanks to Joy, Cheryl, Peter and Margaret for their assistance on the day. Given you've all had a warm up on terrain similar to the National Orienteering League event at the university being held in a few months, you have no excuse for a bad run then. Regardless, do enter that University sprint event. It's being held on world class sprint orienteering terrain and is being organised by a respected and capable team.
