Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

Report by Carolyn Rigby.....

A windy but fine day dawned for NOY 7 at Brush Creek, Glendale. Fathers were indulged for "their" day with some excellent courses set by Rob Vincent (who brought his father, Jeff, along). We were all indulged with access to the facilities of Glendale THS which made life very easy.

Despite an annual use of the map, plus club coaching days and Hunter Valley Schools Champs a couple of years ago, Rob still managed challenging courses calling on tight navigation and considered route choice to some "new" control sites.

What may have eluded most people was that at the same time celebrations were taking place in Victoria. What's the link? Last Sunday was the 25th anniversary of WOC which was held in the Bendigo and Castlemaine areas. Some sections of those courses were re-run in the granite at Kooyoora though the consensus was that vegetation is much thicker. Cast your mind back to what Rob was wearing on Sunday. - a not so recent Australian Orienteering Team jacket, though I suspect it wasn't from 1985. Check out the article in the current Australian Orienteer - quite a few names mentioned in the article are still heavily involved in Orienteering - truly a sport for life!

Great to see a good attendance with some visitors from Sydney clubs too. An emphatic win to Alex Massey in the Long Red has virtually sealed a pointscore win, but 7.3km wasn't long enough for him so he warmed down with the 3km Short Red. The Medium Red continues to provide the closest competition with that category still very much up for grabs. Laura Slatter continues to improve and her showing in the Blue course is impressive.

Thanks to all the Vincent family for their contribution to the event.
